‘Kai Waho’ means outdoor cuisine, and when combined with Poronui’s native surroundings, it’s the complete Māori outdoor experience. This is a real opportunity to learn about the indigenous New Zealand Māori. How they existed, how they kept their culture and traditions alive for centuries, and how they gathered, stored, and cooked food.
Tom Loughlin, tangata whenua (person of the land), is not only passionate about his culture but is also a professional chef and expert hunter/gatherer. Tom uses traditional Māori gathering techniques and cooking methods to create a magnificent hāngī feast, while sharing his knowledge and stories.

There are a few unique ‘Kai Waho’ experiences that can be added to a stay at Poronui.
Kai Waho Hīkoi: the physical Māori journey including kaitiakitanga from $750 per day (up to 6 guests).
Kai Waho Hāngī: the mostly widely used method of cooking by Māori for more than 2000 years from $188 per person (up to 10 guests).
Kai Waho Tangata Whenua for a truly authentic experience (POA).
