Rick Tromble’s Poronui Adventure
Rick Tromble is a successful entrepreneur who joined us in 2025 for a hunting and fly-fishing experience with his wife Michele.
I am 70 years old, and my favorite thing to do is hunt white tail deer with my family on my Michigan farm.
A few years ago, my wife Michele and I were on a Viking Ocean cruise that ended in Auckland. I’d researched different Red Stag outfitters in New Zealand, and based on the testimony, lodge accommodations and hunting opportunities, decided to try Poronui.

I had a great guide, Darrin, who worked and lived on the farm. Originally, I was only going to hunt for a Red Stag of around 450 points, but ended up with a 9-year-old Red Stag of 700 points – one of the biggest harvested on the property. In addition I shot a Sika 9-point buck, and a beautiful Fallow buck that I did a full mount of.
My wife and I also went fly fishing. A helicopter dropped us and our guide on a remote riverbank, where she landed a huge brown trout. She also enjoyed a massage in our private cabin, which was a real highlight for her.
The cooks and their meals were amazing. One of the chefs was telling about the cooking school she went to in France and the meals showed her talents.
We plan to return in two years, when my son-in-law turns 50, for a family hunting trip – and hopefully another great Red Stag.
