From a 15-day moose hunt in Alaska to hearing a Red Stag roar in the New Zealand wildness – our newest hunting guide, Marcus Adlam, is excited to be able to share his passions with Poronui hunters.
Originally from Tolaga Bay on the East Coast of the North Island, Marcus started his guiding career in New Zealand before heading overseas to gain international hunting experience. The most memorable being four seasons spent as a hunting and fishing guide in Alaska. He spent his time there stalking brown bears and moose as well as catching some stunning Rainbow Trout, Artic Grayling, Arctic Char and Northern Pike.
“My most memorable hunts are taking part in the 15-day Alaskan bear and moose combo. Hunting in Alaska is very much governed by seasons and this is the most exciting one for me. Spending two weeks in the Alaskan mountains and on the rivers, staying in rustic cabins and in spike camps and stalking and spotting giant bulls from motor boats and float planes. It is an epic experience and one that I would never have dreamed of being a part of.
The excitement that hits you when you see the animals out in the wild is incredible. The first season I was over there as a packer and 8 days into the 15-day hunt I witnessed a guy shooting a bull moose at 50 yards in the spruce. Two days later I watched his brother shoot a big 64-inch bull that just came out and stood in the middle of a meadow. Preparing and packing this bull back to the boats at 2am followed by an hour-long jet boat ride down treacherous rivers by flashlight completed an awesome first moose season.”
When the opportunity came up for Marcus to join the guiding team at Poronui he jumped at it. Marcus has a special connection with the property as it was from here that he took off to shoot his first Sika deer at age 9.
“I am really looking forward to working at Poronui and introducing international hunters to the beauty of Red Stag hunting in New Zealand. The roar is something very unique to New Zealand and I can’t wait to share it with fellow hunters.”
