Getting Here
Getting to Poronui

Poronui is located in the rugged center of New Zealand's North Island, a 45-minute drive from the resort town of Taupo along the Napier-Taupo Highway. Taupo has a small airport that is roughly one hour’s flight from Auckland or Wellington.
There's no need to rent a car, since transfers by our guides can be arranged - the Poronui van will pick you up for the drive to the property and will take you around the property as required.
Driving Directions
If you choose to drive yourself, take State Highway 5 from Taupo towards Napier for 25km. Turn right into Taharua Road (signage for Taharua Road is on the left hand side of the road). Travel down Taharua Road for 21km. The last part of Taharua Road has a gravel surface – drive with care. At our boundary there is a river-stone wall on either side of the road with ‘PORONUI’ written on the left hand wall. Continue past these walls. At the end of Taharua Road is our electronic gate right across the road. On the wall on the left of the gate is the sign ‘PORONUI’.
Immediately before the gate on the right is a stone pillar with a key pad. Press 1000 for the lodge and identify yourself to the lodge staff, who can open the gate automatically. Proceed to a curved river-stone wall on the right-hand side of the road with the sign ‘Poronui Ranch’. Take the entrance to the right immediately before the sign. This will bring you through the pine trees to the lodge.
If you are driving from Napier, take State Highway 5 towards Taupo. Approximately 6km past the Rangitaiki Lodge (pub/tea rooms on north side of State Highway 5) turn left into Taharua Road (signage for Taharua Road is on the right).
Public Access to Poronui
The good news is you don't have to be a paying guest to visit Poronui and fish the waters of the Taharua or Mohaka Rivers.
Poronui borders on the Kaimanawa Forest Park, a popular tramping (hiking) destination.
Public access to the Park is provided along a marked route winding its way through the valley, ending in the
Forest Park near the Mohaka River and the Oamaru Hut.

Tramping Access
Kaimanawa Forest Park is accessible via a walking route through Poronui.
A public carpark is provided at the end of the public road into the property, after which a poled route
from the end of Taharua Road to the Mohaka River provides walking access through Poronui to the Oamaru Valley.
The walk from the Poronui Gate carpark to the Oamaru Hut takes approximately 4 hours.
A condition of access is that absolutely no hunting is allowed on the property, and hunters should remove rifle bolts.
Please note that Hunting permits from the Department of Conservation confer no right of access across private land.
