Small Game Hunting

Small Game Hunting at Glazebrook in New Zealand

The many opportunities to hunt small game species ensure plenty to do when staying at Glazebrook. After you have shot your trophies you can keep hunting for the rest of your stay.

Wild Pig

Wild pigs are a real highlight. Initially liberated by Captain Cook in 1773 the wild pig is now found through most of New Zealand. Large boars make great trophies while the opportunity to add wild pork to the menu is usually seized upon with relish. Pigs frequent Glazebrook throughout the year although it is winter when they are most visible as they descend on the more fertile low country. While many New Zealanders use dogs to hunt pigs, the wide open spaces of Glazebrook suit spot and stalk techniques.

Arapawa Ram

The spiralled horns of the Arapawa ram, coupled with the clear narrow face and tightly curled fleece, make a great trophy and are a real bonus animal when hunting at Glazebrook. Arapawa sheep are typically light on their feet and active - characteristics that make them perfectly suited to living in steep terrain which makes them right at home at Glazebrook.

The Arapawa is thought to have developed from escapees of a flock of merino sheep. They take their name from Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds - a location where they have been known for over 130 years.

Feral Goats

Feral goats abound on Glazebrook. While it is unusual to find a billy with trophy quality horns, they none-the-less provide a good hunting experience on the steeper areas of the property that they tend to frequent. Goat hunting can provide an enjoyable way to spend a day after the main trophies have been secured. It is also an excellent species for new or younger hunters to develop their skills.

Other Small Game

Hares and rabbits provide small game action around the river flats in the evening, while a New Zealand hunting trip is not complete without a night shoot for the nocturnal brush tailed oppossum. A marsupial, the possum was introduced from Australia in 1837. Unfortunately possums found New Zealand so much to their liking they quickly became a major pest. The luxurious fur of the possum is highly sought after for clothing, particularly when mixed with merino wool. It also makes an unusual trophy for overseas hunters.

Game Birds

Wing shooters will also find a wide range of species with mallard and grey duck around the wetland areas, Canada Geese on the river flats and California Quail around the scrub country. The game bird hunting season commences the first Saturday in May so it is possible to combine some bird shooting with a trophy hunt.

Our Poronui property also carries Pheasant and Quail, and Paradise Duck enjoy the 24 miles of river on the property.
