Experience the best of New Zealand trophy hunting in the North or South Island. Poronui Hunting operates primarily from three private properties – all providing high quality hunting and genuine Kiwi hospitality. Listed below are descriptions of the properties, their terrain and the game animals available at each.
Hunting at Poronui in the North Island
Poronui, our premier property and Lodge is nestled in the secluded Taharua Valley, south-east of Taupo on New Zealand’s spectacular North Island. It has evolved from a rustic wilderness camp into one of the world’s finest sporting facilities. The property is a wonderful outdoor playground and offers excellent game estate and exceptional free range hunting opportunities.
Superb natural habitat, the hunting is challenging yet achievable for all ages and physical ability. Due to the range of species, there are exciting trophy hunting opportunities available year round. The mosaic of undulating grasslands, native beech forest, exotic pine or eucalypt plantations and shrub lands creates ideal habitat and cover for deer. Framed by the magnificent wilderness of the Kaimanawa Mountains it is easy to understand that you are part of a unique hunting experience.
Poronui evokes a unique response – almost indescribable but never forgotten. Truly a special place to hunt.
Hunting at Glazebrook in the South Island
Glazebrook is a vast private estate in the South Island of New Zealand. This premier sporting property offers an isolated and unspoiled experience in an authentic high country station, with a brand-new lodge and both game estate and excellent free range hunting. The rugged natural beauty of Glazebrook combined with the array of animals makes hunting at Glazebrook a truly memorable experience.
The high mountain valleys and mixture of grass, scrub and beech forest are ideal red deer habitat and there is simply nothing like stalking a roaring stag out in the tussock of a hanging valley. The steep open country ensures that all hunts are challenging but also enables hunters to cross large amounts of terrain and carefully select particular animals to stalk. Chamois make their homes on the snow-capped mountain peaks.
This is not casual hunting – whether you choose to hunt in the game estate or free range, the landscape at Glazebrook is a true test for a hunter. You will need to be fit to spot and stalk on the steep scree slopes of high country New Zealand, but it’s an experience you will never forget – and we promise you a comfortable bed and country style meals to sustain you.
We have access to this 100,000 acre privately owned hunting property located in the heart of the South Island high country and surrounded by majestic mountains, lakes and rivers. The setting in the central Southern Alps provides a truly memorable experience.
Hunting is on foot in the steep and rugged alpine and sub-alpine grassland zones, usually between 1,000 and 2,000 metres above sea level, where Tahr graze on snow tussocks, alpine herbs and sub-alpine shrubland plants. A helicopter is optional and can be used to provide access for hunters who do not wish to walk. The weather is traditionally very hot in summer and cold in winter, and there are stunning views of snow-capped mountains and crystal clear glacial lakes all year round. The property provides some of the best Tahr hunting in the world for a challenging and thrilling hunt.
