Experience some of the most diverse, beautiful and unspoilt landscape in New Zealand.
Many of our guests come for a multi-day walking holiday while others enjoy a day strolling along the banks of the river or venturing into the hills.
Enjoy breath-taking scenery at your own pace. Take a leisurely stroll adjacent to the Lodge and along the river margins, or for the more adventurous explore the hill country trails.
For those wanting real solitude, take one of our simple maps and perhaps a picnic lunch.
Our guided walks are to the more remote corners of the property with a chance to view and photograph indigenous flora and fauna. The 6,000 acres of virgin beech forest is a haven for endangered species such as native mistletoe, bush falcons and the Kaka, a New Zealand parrot. If you’re very lucky you might spot one of the rare native small-scaled skinks (Oligosoma microlepis) found only in the central North Island.
Native plant and bird guidebooks are available on request.
And while opportunities to view deer are a feature of Poronui, more committed wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the walk through the game estate. For the photographer there is the opportunity to “hunt” deer with their lens.
New Zealand is well known for its impressive mountain scenery, and what better way than heli-hiking to experience some of the most spectacular land forms in the country.
From Poronui we can transport you to truly remote areas of the Central North Island where you and your guide can enjoy the magic of the high country in solitude. The variety of scenery and terrain is quite incredible.
The Tongariro National Park, a dual World Heritage Site is only a short helicopter ride from Poronui. The world renowned Tongariro Alpine Crossing includes unique landforms and amazing views of the volcanic peaks of Mt. Ngauruhoe, Mt. Tongariro and Mt. Ruapehu.
All heli-hiking excursions are fully guided by one of our experienced guides. Their knowledge ensures you get the most from your day, without the worry of timetables and safety considerations.
The programme for the multi day walking holiday is tailored to suit different fitness levels from the beginner experiencing the back country for the first time to the medium to advanced walkers.
