Poronui
A Very Special Place
Nestled in the secluded Taharua Valley on New Zealand’s spectacular North Island is Poronui, the luxury wilderness retreat preferred by the world’s most discerning outdoor enthusiasts.
The property is a wonderful outdoor playground. We offer a range of outdoor activities from fly fishing to hunting and have excellent facilities for hiking, horse-riding, mountain-bike riding, clay pigeon shooting and rafting. There are more than 100 miles of roads and tracks that wind their way through the hills and along the streams for exploring the native bush and wilderness.
You can choose from three authentic, world-class accommodation options: the legendary Poronui Lodge, the rustic-luxe Safari Camp or the stately Blake House. Close to the main lodge, a modern sports and relaxation center called The Stables has gym and health club facilities.
Poronui Lodge
The main lodge and guest cabins have evolved from what was once a rustic fishing camp into one of the world's finest fishing lodge holiday destinations. Accommodation has been designed with the traditional fishing and hunting lodge atmosphere in mind, but also combine elements of modern luxury with wonderful style.
The Safari Camp
An exciting addition to the Poronui experience are the stylish timber and canvas tents of this safari-style camp. Situated on the bank of the Mohaka River, the camp is a days' horse ride or 30 minutes drive from the lodge. The camp is available on a fully-serviced basis for luxury overnight camp-outs and provides an incredible opportunity to enjoy splendid back country isolation whilst not forgoing creature comforts like crisp cotton sheets, hot running water, flushing toilets and fine food and wine!
Blake House
Situated on an imperious plateau overlooking the Taharua River, this magnificent residence has been graced by corporate leaders celebrities and royalty. If you’re seeking five-star accommodation in an utterly unique location, with whisper-quiet seclusion, luxury and the world’s finest food and wine, search no more. Your ultimate wilderness retreat - and Poronui’s crowning glory - is Blake House.
The Stables
This modern sports and relaxation centre has gym and health club facilities - including steam and sauna rooms, and massage treatment rooms. Also located in this complex is a cigar room, including a full-sized antique English billiard table. The Stables also houses the outdoor barbeque area and underground wine cellar – both used regularly as dining venues.
Further Afield
Despite the seclusion of Poronui valley, the lodge is only 30 minutes from the busy tourist centre of Lake Taupo and close to a variety of other attractions. To the east, and little more than an hour by car (15 minutes by helicopter), is the Pacific Ocean and the art deco city of Napier with its cafes, antique stores and galleries. The alluvial coastal plain around Napier is known as the grape growing and wine making centre of New Zealand.
There is no better way to capture the spirit of a lazy summer day than a wine tasting tour of the Hawke's Bay vineyards.
A similar one hour journey to the north will see you in Rotorua, famous for its natural volcanic springs. Further north lies Auckland - one of the most beautiful harbourside cities in the world. A car and driver can be arranged on a daily basis for sightseeing trips, or for transfers to any other region of the North Island. The airstrip at Poronui is suitable for twin engine aircraft, and enables private and charter planes to effortlessly take our guests anywhere in New Zealand.
