Fly Fishing
Avid fly fishers from all corners of the globe come to Poronui to test their skills against New Zealand’s notoriously large, and wily, brown and rainbow trout. Expect to fish new water every day no matter how long you stay. Discover secluded streams with angling opportunities to suit every preference or ability. Poronui was recently voted by Forbes Magazine as one of the top ten fly fishing destinations in the world. More information about
fly fishing in New Zealand can be found on our Poronui website.
Guided Horse Treks
There are more than 100 miles of roads and trails ideally suited for horse riding. These trails make their way through tree covered hills and cross the gentle streams of the property offering great views of diverse landscapes, ranging from lush native forests to low open grasslands. On your riding treks, expect to hear the song of native birds, see spectacular scenery and gain insight into the pioneering history of the land.
Hiking
A chance to enjoy breath-taking scenery at your own pace. Take a leisurely stroll, or for the more adventurous take to the hill-country trails. With so many on the property it would be impossible to cover them all in a week’s stay.
For those wanting real solitude, take one of our simple maps and perhaps a picnic lunch.
The guided walks are to the more remote corners of the property with a chance to view / photograph some of our indigenous flora and fauna. The 6,000 acres of virgin beech forest is a haven for endangered species such as native mistle-toe, bush falcons and Kaka, a rare New Zealand parrot. Native plant and bird guide books are available on request.
Heli-Hiking (Fully Guided)
New Zealand is well known for its impressive mountain scenery and what better way than heli-hiking to experience some of the most spectacular land forms in the country.
Heli-hiking at Poronui will transport you to truly remote areas of the Central North Island where you and your guide can enjoy the magic of the high-country in solitude. The variety of scenery and terrain is quite incredible.
All heli-hiking excursions are fully guided by one of our staff. Their knowledge and experience ensures you get the most from your day without the worry of timetables and safety considerations.
Mountain Biking
Explore the property on two wheels. Quality mountain bikes are available for use by our guests. Short runs from the lodge are easily organized but to really explore the property or for longer excursions, we recommend using the services of one of our experienced guides.
Shooting
The shooting school at Poronui provides personalized tuition.
- Shot Guns - The sporting clays course is built in a steep wooded valley with multiple shooting stations and a fully automated twenty trap layout.
- Rifles - For the rifle enthusiasts train your eye at our target range.
- Field Archery - Start in the practice area before heading out on the field course. There you will find 3 dimensional targets hiding in the bush.
A few sessions on these courses under the watchful eye of your tutor is a perfect way to hone existing or develop your skills.
Rafting & Kayaking
Rafting and kayaking takes you to some of the more remote parts of the rivers and streams. The experience can be as exhilarating as you wish. All our trips are led by a certified guide.
Unwind
Close to the main lodge in our Stables Complex, is a gym, steam and sauna rooms, and massage rooms. Book a relaxing massage from one of our professional massage therapists.
Also located in this complex is a satellite television, large open fire and a full-sized antique English billiard table complete with snooker and pool balls.
Further Afield: Hawke’s Bay - Wine / Food / Art Deco
Despite the seclusion of the Poronui valley, a little more than an hour by car (15 minutes by helicopter), is the art deco city of Napier with its cafes, antique stores and galleries. The area around Napier is known as the wine making centre of New Zealand. Our guides will take you on a personalized ‘behind the scenes’ tour not generally available to independent travelers. Try wine straight from barrel and meet with wine makers / owners as they explain their wine–making styles and philosophies.
Hawke’s Bay is also well known for its artisan food production. Visit boutique cheese, olive oil, coffee roasters, micro breweries, and organic food producers. Your personalized tour ensures you meet with the personalities behind these cottage industries. Sample from the huge range of foods available, put together your own tasting platter and match it with local wines -a great day out for ‘foodies’ and wine lovers alike.
Further Afield: Golf
If golf is your passion there are 2 great options available during your stay at Poronui.
Wairakei was New Zealand’s first international course and is still one of the finest in the country. Wairakei is only 45 minutes from Poronui by car. Twenty minutes from Poronui by helicopter is New Zealand’s newest international course. Cape Kidnappers was completed in 2005 and was immediately rated 27th in the Top 100 golf courses of the world. Golfing aficionados and social players alike rave about their time at ‘The Cape’.
Further Afield: Taupo
Just thirty minutes from Poronui is Taupo, the adrenalin centre of the North Island. For the young….or indeed young at heart, there are plenty of options that will get your pulse leaping. Tandem sky diving, bungy jumping, white water rafting and jet boating are some of the more popular activities.
Immediately north of Taupo is the geothermal area of Rotorua famous for its spectacular geysers, multi-coloured hot springs and boiling mud pools. Museums and displays outlining local history are numerous…..as are various performances demonstrating traditional Maori song, dance and haka (war dance). The range of activities available at Taupo means it really is a town for all seasons and all age groups.

Maoritanga
Poronui also offers a unique Maori cultural experience on neighbouring Tuwharetoa tribal land. Kai Waho can be translated as 'outdoor cuisine' and can also describe a master, or teacher, of the ways of the wilderness. Combine these and you have an unparalleled food and wilderness experience with Tom Loughlin. As 'tangata whenua' (person of the land), Tom is not only passionate about his culture, but is also a professional chef and expert hunter/gatherer and incorporates shared knowledge and stories. The Kai Waho experience can be added to any Poronui visit.
