Poronui in the North Island

Poronui has evolved from a rustic fishing camp into one of the world’s finest fishing, hunting and wilderness lodges.  Poronui is where sika were first liberated in New Zealand more than 100 years ago and remains the centre of the sika range. Our free range hunting is second to none. Quite simply, more high quality free range trophies are taken on Poronui than any other New Zealand property.

If that’s not enough, the extensive 3,000 acre game estate is home to high quality red stag hunting, fallow and rusa deer as well as sika. A superb habitat, the hunting is challenging yet achievable. The mosaic of native beech forest, exotic pine or eucalypt plantations and grass and shrub lands creates a stunning landscape. Framed by the magnificent wilderness of the Kaimanawa Mountains it is easy to understand that you are part of a unique hunting experience.

Poronui evokes a unique response – almost indescribable but never forgotten. Truly a special place to hunt.

North Island Back Country

The property is a wonderful outdoor playground, offering a range of outdoor activities from fly fishing to hunting and has excellent facilities for hiking, horse-riding, mountain-bike riding, clay pigeon shooting and rafting. There are more than 100 miles of roads and tracks that wind their way through the hills and along the streams for exploring the native bush and wilderness.

Other Activities

The 16,000 acre property is possibly the best fishing lodge New Zealand has to offer and has been a favored fishing and hunting ground for ancient Maori tribes. Today the trout fishing and hunting on Poronui are recognized as world class, and Poronui was voted by Forbes Magazine as being one of the top ten fly fishing destinations in the world. We also offer a wide range of activities from mountain biking, wilderness walks and field archery to massage, a Maoritanga experience and more.  Find out more about the accommodation at Poronui here.
